Lucy Gilmore's Favorite Dog Breeds!

We're celebrating the release of Lucy Gilmore's Puppy Christmas, book 2 in the Forever Home series! So we decided to ask Lucy about her favorite dog breeds! Here's what she had to say...

I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like. Granted, some are a little bit harder to love than others (I’m looking at you, dog next door who barks every morning at 6:00 am), but if I have my choice between spending time with a canine or spending time with literally any other living creature, I’m picking the dog.

I like them big. I like them small. I like them long-haired. I like them short-haired. I like them sweet and composed, and I like them full of yapping energy. Basically, I’m a sucker for a wet nose and a wagging tail.

Although it’s tough to pick five favorites, here’s my list:

1. AKITA

Picture
I currently own two Akita mixes, so these guys naturally top my list of favorite breeds. They’re a strange combination of highly energetic and super chill. They’ll hike for miles in the mountains one day and then sit like a blob on the couch the next—and be perfectly content in either case. As this happens to match my own lifestyle, we get along very well. Plus they get bonus points for being floofy and loyal.

2. PIT BULL

This can be a bit of a contentious choice, but I owned a Pit Bull for more than fifteen years, and she was the love my life. The first home she lived in wasn’t a happy one, and she never quite got over her fear of plastic bags or people in helmets, but she was a sweetheart down to her core. She loved children and naps and was a real trooper when I made her dress up in adorable sweaters. Plus, you can’t beat that Pit Bull smile.

3. BOSTON TERRIER

Picture
In my early twenties, I worked in a small business office. One of the women there had an elderly Boston Terrier (RIP Winston) who would sit grumpily at her feet all day long. I spent the majority of my time there trying to win him over, but he (very) disdainfully wanted nothing to do with me. I can respect that kind of curmudgeonly reticence. He was practically a romance hero in the making.

4. COCKAPOO

(A mix between a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel breed)
A few years ago, I would have never put a Cockapoo on my list of favorite dogs. I wasn’t particularly familiar with the breed, and although they seemed nice, nothing in particular stood out about them. Well, fast forward to writing Puppy Christmas, and my mind got changed in a big way. These dogs are exceptional hearing service animals—not just because they have good ears and a quick intelligence, but because they are incredibly docile. They love children, adults, older people, other dogs, mailmen, FedEx delivery works…you get the point. They’re soft, easygoing, diligent bundles of curls. What’s not to love?

5. MIXED BREED

Picture
I’ve only ever owned mixed breed dogs. Growing up, I had a Chow Chow/Black Lab. Then it was on to Molly, my Pit Bull (who was mixed with something small, because she only came up to my mid-calf). Then these two came into my life. Duke, in the back, is an Akita/Lab. Monty, in front, is an Akita/Dutch Shepherd. There’s something about the element of mystery in a mixed breed dog that I adore. They’re a constant surprise and delight, showing parts of their personality that I never knew about before.

What about you? Are there any amazing breeds I missed?

About Puppy Christmas (Available September 24, 2019!)

These adorable service puppies are matchmakers in the making…
Lila Vasquez might not be the “fun one” at Puppy Promise—the service puppy training school she runs with her sisters—but she can always be counted on to get things done. So when her latest client shows an interest in princess gowns over power suits, Lila puts aside her scruples, straps on the glittery heels, and gets to work.

If only the adorable six-year-old’s father wasn’t such an appealing Prince Charming.

Ford’s whole life revolves around his daughter…until he meets Lila. Smart, capable, and amazing at helping Emily gain confidence with her new service puppy at her side, Lila is everything he ever wanted—but she’s way out of his league. Good thing Emily and her new pup are up to the matchmaking task. This Christmas, it’s all hands (and paws) on deck!
