How Do I Stay Inspired by Holly Castillo

​Every day I see or hear something that makes me think “What if…?” and asking those questions leads me to an idea for a scene, description, or even an entire book! I’m blessed to be working with a young man with Asperger’s who dreams of publishing a book. His creativity and excitement inspire me greatly. When I’m writing, I’m transported to a different time or place and get to live vicariously through my characters. How can I not be inspired when I can be anyone, anywhere, at any time?

What Are the Top Five Things That Inspire Me?

• My husband is a Cowboy and a Leader. Hearing about his antics trying to load the bull on the trailer, managing a difficult situation with his usual dimpled smile and charm, and sharing his knowledge with our children are the base for all of my heroes
• My mother-in-law and father-in-law have been married for 50 years, and they still act like young lovers. They do everything together and love each other so intensely, it inspires me to give my characters a love just as beautiful
• The Latinx culture is a huge part of my life. At the age of eighteen, my husband’s family took me in and shared their world with me. The intense passion and devotion of the Latinx culture inspire the way I portray my characters
• Traveling the great state of Texas gives me so much inspiration! For the Texas Navy SEALs series, I’d actually planned on using a fictional town. We went on a road trip to the Texas/Mexico border and I had nearly a whole binder full of notes. Then we wandered off the beaten path and we came upon Hebbronville, Texas. Instantly I knew the town was perfect for my stories. The people, the history, the café where everyone goes for a good cup of coffee—a simple road trip can create an entire series
• My Military Family and Friends share their stories and experiences with me and never get tired of all my questions. Their loyalty, devotion, and bravery inspire me every day
